This position represents the technical elements of experience design and implementation within RLMG project teams, contributes to prototyping and R&D, and participates in testing, installation, and support. This position reports to the Director of Creative Technology.

A successful candidate for the Creative Technologist position has a background in interactive experiences and spaces, hands-on experience with a wide variety of AV technologies, and is enthusiastic about new and innovative media experiences. 

This is a full-time, hybrid position requiring 2+ days in our Watertown, MA office per week, and occasional project travel.

We are offering a starting salary range of $60,000- 75,000, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

Technical Consultation & Support on Ongoing Projects (40%)

  • Understand and define hardware and software requirements for RLMG media exhibits. Act as a key person within production teams to ensure the feasibility and technical efficiency of each project.

  • Develop detailed technical approaches and hardware specifications for RLMG projects.

  • Coordinate with outside partners (clients, fabrication, AV integration, and 3D design) at key project milestones.

Experience & Interaction Design (20%)

  • Collaborate with designers, developers, and others to translate experience and learning goals into novel, usable interactive exhibits.

  • Participate in design to conceptualize technical and creative solutions to meet client needs within project constraints.

  • Support project teams with research into potential technology solutions, form factors, and types of interaction.

Prototyping and R&D (20%)

  • Create software prototypes to answer specific user interface, hardware compatibility, or technological questions during project design and production phases.

  • Design and build physical prototypes to test scale, form factor, and custom interfaces.

  • Research and evaluate innovative technologies that may be applicable to future work.

  • Advocate for new technologies, tools, or skillsets to be incorporated into RLMG projects.

  • Document prototyping results and share outcomes for internal professional development and external marketing.

Testing & Installation (10%)

  • Coordinate user testing, QA testing, and in-office AV setup on select projects.

  • Consult on remote and onsite installation process for select media projects.

  • Act as a liaison to outside partners and AV integrators to make sure that project technical goals and requirements are met.

  • Travel to supervise integration and complete select media installations.

  • Coordinate with Installation & Support Manager to prepare media manuals documenting software installation, configuration, and other details for client use and internal reference.

Support for Completed Projects (10%)

  • Coordinate with Installation & Support Manager to respond to requests for technical support on completed installations.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience designing, producing, or supporting interactive media installations

  • Experience with a wide variety of AV technologies and installations

  • Experience working with Arduino or other prototyping platforms and related sensors

  • Programming skills in one or more environment (Unity, Javascript, C, Python, TouchDesigner, digital signage systems)

  • Experience with prototyping and user testing

  • A passion for interactive media for public spaces (museums, themed attractions, live venues and events, theater, media arts, etc.)

  • Strong organizational skills to juggle multiple tasks

  • Ability to creatively and collaboratively solve technical problems with developers, designers, and other project partners

  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical project partners

  • Multi-talented and versatile

This is a flexible role with responsibilities that are tailored to the individual. Individuals may have some combination of the following qualifications:

  • An aptitude for building and programming physical prototypes

  • Experience with 3-dimensional design tools and familiarity with construction documents, technical drawings, etc.

  • Proficiency with Adobe design suite tools
